Why is my keyword showing as “low search volume”?

When a keyword in your Google Ads account receives the status “Low search volume,” it means that the term is associated with very little search traffic on Google. Crucially, Google temporarily makes these keywords inactive so that they do not trigger your ads.

This status is not a reflection of your Quality Score or bidding strategy, but purely a measure of how often that specific term is searched for globally over the past 12 months.

What “Low Search Volume” Means

For practical purposes, if a keyword receives fewer than 10 searches per month (a widely accepted, though not officially published, threshold), Google may deem it inactive.

The core reasons Google applies this status are:

  1. Relevance and Efficiency: Google aims to serve ads efficiently. Keywords with extremely low volume are not relevant to the majority of customer searches and would clutter the auction system if allowed to run.

  2. User Experience: If a keyword rarely has a searcher, it’s better to pause it than show an ad to the one person who searched, only to have the ad system lag or fail to serve efficiently.

Common Reasons for the Low Search Volume Status

The keyword itself is usually the problem, fitting one of the following criteria:

Reason

Explanation

Example (UTDS Optimal Choice)

Too Specific / Obscure

The keyword is a hyper-specific, long-tail query that few users would ever type in.

Compound/Hybrid Keyword

You combined too many ideas into one search term that doesn’t flow naturally.

New Brand or Term

You are bidding on a brand new product, service, or term that has not yet gained search traction (common for new product launches).

Obsolete Terminology

You are using outdated industry jargon that users no longer search for.

Misspellings/Typos

While Google’s matching can cover common misspellings, very obscure or nonsensical typos may be flagged.

How to Fix or Utilise “Low Search Volume” Keywords

You have three main options for dealing with this status:

Strategy

Action to Take

Why It Works

1. Broaden the Match Type

If the keyword is Exact Match or Phrase Match, change it to Broad Match.

Broad Match allows your ad to show for a much wider range of related searches, increasing the likelihood of hitting the volume threshold. E.g., Change [utds choice pricing] to utds choice pricing

2. Delete and Research

Remove the keyword and use the Google Ads Keyword Planner tool to find similar, higher-volume alternatives.

Replaces the inefficient keyword with a proven, searchable term, ensuring your ads are eligible to run immediately.

3. Do Nothing (Wait & Watch)

Leave the keyword as is, especially if it relates to a new product/launch you anticipate will soon be trending.

Google automatically checks the volume regularly. If search interest picks up (e.g., after an advertising campaign or press mention), the keyword will be reactivated automatically. This is a good strategy for Brand Terms during a launch.

Example Scenario

Company: UTDS Optimal Choice (utds.io)

Issue: They added the keyword [utds optimal choice user licence cost] to an Exact Match Ad Group. It immediately shows “Low search volume.”

Analysis and Fix:

  1. Diagnosis: The term is too long and specific. Only a handful of people search for the full phrase exactly as written.

  2. Action 1 (Recommended): Change the match type from Exact Match to Phrase Match: “utds optimal choice user licence cost”. This allows the ad to show for similar, slightly broader searches like “utds optimal choice licence fee” or “cost of utds optimal choice”.

  3. Action 2 (Alternative): Shorten the term and use a broader match: utds optimal choice pricing (Broad Match). This will cover all relevant pricing queries and is far more likely to exceed the search volume threshold.
