How do I make my website load faster?

Improving website speed starts with identifying what is making the pages slow. Test the website first, then make targeted changes rather than applying every available optimisation.

1. Test your website

Use Google PageSpeed Insights to test important pages on mobile and desktop.
Review the performance results and recommendations to identify specific problems affecting loading and responsiveness.

2. Optimise images

Large image files are a common source of unnecessary page weight.

  • Resize images to the dimensions actually needed.
  • Compress images before uploading them.
  • Use appropriate modern formats where supported.
  • Avoid using unnecessarily large images.
  • Use responsive images so suitable image resources can be selected for different screen sizes.

3. Reduce unnecessary scripts

Review plugins, tracking tools, advertising scripts, chat widgets and other third-party services.

Remove anything the website does not need. Where appropriate, reduce or defer resources that do not need to load immediately.

4. Use caching

Caching can reduce the amount of work required to generate pages and can allow previously generated resources to be served more efficiently.

If you use WordPress, check whether your hosting provider already provides caching before adding another caching solution.

5. Keep WordPress and plugins maintained

Outdated or poorly configured plugins can contribute to performance problems and compatibility issues.

Remove plugins that are no longer needed and keep the remaining WordPress components maintained.

6. Check hosting performance

If the server is slow to respond, optimising images and scripts may not solve the underlying problem.

Review server response performance and hosting resources. If the website regularly experiences slow server response, speak with your hosting provider or consider whether the hosting environment is suitable for the site’s requirements.
