Before redesigning your website, check whether there is a genuine problem with the current site. A redesign may be necessary if the website is difficult to use, no longer represents your business accurately, or prevents visitors from finding information and taking action.
1. Check how the website works on mobile
Open your website on a smartphone and check:
Is the text easy to read?
Does the navigation work properly?
Are buttons and links easy to tap?
Do images and content fit the screen?
Can visitors complete contact forms easily?
If important parts of the website do not work properly on mobile devices, they need to be addressed.
2. Check your navigation and page structure
Try to find your main services, company information and contact details without using a search engine.
If important information is difficult to find, the navigation or website structure may need to be changed.
Also check whether your current pages still make sense.
For example, you may need to:
Remove outdated pages
Combine similar pages
Create missing service pages
Reorganise your navigation
3. Check your content
Review every important page for accuracy.
Look for:
Outdated services
Incorrect contact information
Old business information
Broken links
Outdated images
Information that no longer reflects how your business operates
If the problem is mainly outdated content, you may not need a complete redesign. Updating the content could be enough.
4. Check whether the website achieves its purpose
Identify the main action you want visitors to take.
For example:
Contact your business
Request a quote
Book an appointment
Make an enquiry
Check whether visitors can understand what to do and find the relevant contact or enquiry option easily.
If the website does not support its intended purpose, its content, layout, navigation or calls to action may need improvement.
5. Decide whether you need a partial or complete redesign
You may only need to redesign specific pages if most of the website still works but certain pages are outdated or ineffective.
A complete redesign may be appropriate when the design, structure, content and user experience all need substantial changes.
Do not assume that every old website needs to be rebuilt from scratch.
6. Plan the redesign before development
If a redesign is necessary, review the existing website first.
A basic process is:
Audit → Decide what to keep, update, remove or add → Plan the new structure → Update content → Design → Develop → Test → Launch
This helps prevent useful content and important pages from being removed unnecessarily.
