How do I connect my domain to my website?

Connecting a domain to your website tells the domain where your website is hosted. This is usually done by changing DNS records at the company that manages your domain.

1. Find out where your website is hosted

First, identify your website hosting provider or website platform.

The provider should give you the DNS information required to connect your domain.

Depending on the platform, you may need to point the domain to specific nameservers, an IP address, or another target.

2. Access your domain settings

Sign in to the account where your domain is registered or where its DNS is managed.

Look for DNS, DNS Management, Nameservers, or a similar setting.

Do not change records unless you know what they are used for, as DNS can also control services such as email.

3. Add the required DNS records

Follow your hosting provider’s instructions and add or update the required records.

Common DNS records include:

  • A record: points a domain or hostname to an IPv4 address.
  • AAAA record: points a hostname to an IPv6 address.
  • CNAME record: points one hostname to another hostname.
  • NS records: specify the authoritative nameservers for a domain.

The exact records you need depend on your hosting setup.

4. Keep important existing records

Before changing DNS, check whether your domain is already being used for email or other services.

Do not delete existing records simply because your hosting provider gives you new website records. Removing email-related DNS records, for example, can interrupt email delivery.

5. Wait for DNS changes

DNS changes do not always appear everywhere immediately. The time required depends on factors such as DNS caching and the records’ TTL (Time to Live).

Avoid repeatedly changing records while waiting, as this can make troubleshooting more difficult.

6. Check the website

Once the DNS changes have taken effect, visit your domain and confirm that it loads the correct website.

Also check both the www and non-www versions if your setup supports them, and make sure HTTPS is working correctly.
