When a user searches for “Plumber near me” or “Coffee shop near me,” they have high commercial intent they are usually ready to buy or visit immediately.
Historically, businesses tried to rank for this by stuffing the phrase “near me” into their text. Do not do this. Google is smart enough to know where the user is and where you are. Instead, you must prove to Google that you are the most relevant and trusted option in that specific location.
1. The Foundation: Accurate Coordinates
Google relies entirely on your Google Business Profile (GBP) to determine your location.
- Pin Placement: Ensure your map pin is exactly on your entrance. Even a 50-metre difference can affect whether you appear in a tight “near me” radius.
- NAP Consistency: Your Name, Address, and Phone number must be identical across the web (Yell, Facebook, your website). If Google sees conflicting addresses, it loses confidence in your location and won’t show you for “near me” queries.
2. Localise Your Website Content
You cannot rank for “near me” if your website only says “We serve the UK.” You need to ground your site in the local area.
- Mention Landmarks: On your contact or “About” page, give directions using local landmarks.
- Example: “Located opposite the Arndale Centre, just a 2-minute walk from Manchester Victoria Station.”
- Why this works: It confirms to Google (and the user) that you are genuinely part of the local fabric, not just a generic national company.
3. Use “LocalBusiness” Schema Markup
Schema is invisible code that helps search engines understand your content. You can add specific “Structured Data” to your website that explicitly tells Google your latitude and longitude.
- The Action: Ask your web developer to add LocalBusiness schema to your homepage.
- The Detail: Include the property hasMap linking to your Google Maps URL and geo coordinates. This removes any ambiguity about your location.
4. Mobile Optimisation is Non-Negotiable
“Near me” searches are almost exclusively performed on mobile devices.
- Click-to-Call: Ensure your phone number is a clickable button. If a user has to copy-paste your number, they will go to a competitor.
- Speed: If your site takes 5 seconds to load on 4G, the user will bounce back to Google. High bounce rates signal to Google that you are not a good result for mobile users.
The Shift from “Keywords” to “Intent”
It is crucial to understand that “near me” is not a keyword you can simply write on your page to rank higher.
Greg Gifford, a globally recognised Local SEO expert, frequently explains this distinction at industry conferences like BrightonSEO:
“You don’t optimise for ‘near me’ by putting ‘near me’ in your title tag or your content. That looks spammy. You optimise for it by having a strong Google Business Profile and robust local content that proves you are located where you say you are.”
Focus on proving you are “in Brixton” (by mentioning Brixton landmarks and getting reviews from Brixton customers). Google will handle the “near me” part of the calculation.
