How do I improve page speed on my website?

Page speed is critical for two reasons: it keeps visitors on your site (User Experience) and it helps you rank higher in search results (SEO). Slow websites frustrate users, leading to higher “bounce rates” where visitors leave before the page has even finished loading.

Follow these priority steps to reduce load times and improve site performance.

1. Optimise Your Images

Large, high-resolution images are the most common cause of slow websites. If you upload a 5MB photo directly from your camera, the browser has to download that entire file before it can show the page.

  • Compress images: Use tools like TinyPNG or Squoosh to reduce file size without losing visible quality.
  • Use modern formats: Convert JPEGs and PNGs to WebP (a modern format that is much lighter).
  • Enable Lazy Loading: This ensures images further down the page only load when the user scrolls to them, rather than all at once.

Maile Ohye, formerly a Developer Programs Tech Lead at Google, set the industry standard for speed expectations in a widely cited Google Webmaster tutorial:

“2 seconds is the threshold for ecommerce website acceptability. At Google, we aim for under half a second.”

2. Minify CSS, JavaScript, and HTML

Every website relies on code files to function. Often, these files contain unnecessary characters like whitespace, comments, and line breaks that make the file larger than necessary. “Minification” removes these to make the file lighter.

  • How to do it: If you use a CMS like WordPress, plugins like WP Rocket or Autoptimize can do this automatically. If you have a custom site, your developer can run a build script to minify code before deploying.

Tip:

Audit your plugins. If you are using WordPress, every plugin you add likely loads its own CSS and JavaScript files. Deactivate and delete any plugins you are not actively using to instantly reduce “code bloat.”

3. Leverage Browser Caching

When a visitor lands on your website, their browser downloads your logo, CSS files, and images. “Browser caching” tells the visitor’s browser to save (cache) these files locally on their device for a set period (e.g., 30 days).

When they visit a second page or return to your site later, they don’t need to download everything again the browser loads the saved files instantly.

“HTTP caching is your first line of defense… It reduces the load on your server and improves the performance for the user by removing the network latency.”

4. Improve Server Response Time (TTFB)

Even if your site is optimised, it will be slow if your web hosting server is slow. “Time to First Byte” (TTFB) is the measurement of how long the browser waits before it receives the first piece of data from the server.

  • Upgrade Hosting: Cheap shared hosting often overcrowds servers. switching to a dedicated server or a high-quality cloud host (like SiteGround or AWS) can dramatically improve speed.
  • Use a Content Delivery Network (CDN): A CDN (like Cloudflare) stores copies of your site on servers around the world. If a user visits from London, the site loads from a UK server; if they visit from New York, it loads from a US server.

Tip:

Check your location. Ensure your web host’s data centre is located geographically close to your primary audience (e.g., if your customers are in the UK, do not host your site on a server in California).

5. Focus on “Core Web Vitals”

Google measures speed using a specific set of metrics called Core Web Vitals. The most important one for perceived speed is LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) which measures how long it takes for the main content (like the hero image or headline) to become visible.

Expert Insight: Google has explicitly made these metrics a ranking factor. According to their official documentation on page experience:

“To provide a good user experience, LCP should occur within 2.5 seconds of when the page first starts loading.”
