How do I rank higher in the local map pack?

Ranking in the Map Pack is different from ranking in standard organic search. Google uses a specific algorithm for maps based on three core pillars: Relevance, Distance, and Prominence.

Follow this strategy to signal to Google that your business is the best answer for local searchers.

1. Master the “Primary Category”

Your choice of primary category is the single most influential ranking factor.

  • Be Specific: Do not just choose “Contractor” if you are a “Plumber”. If you are a specialist, choose “Heating Contractor” or “Drainage Service”.
  • The Rule: You can have up to 10 categories, but the Primary Category holds significantly more weight than the secondary ones. Set your primary category to match the keyword you most want to rank for.

2. Drive Review Velocity and Keywords

It is not just about the number of stars; it is about the content of the reviews.

  • Keywords in Reviews: If a customer writes, “They fixed my blocked drain in Bristol,” Google scans those words. This signals that you are trusted for “Blocked Drains” in “Bristol”.
  • Steady Flow: Getting 50 reviews in one day and then zero for three months looks suspicious. Aim for a steady stream of 1-2 reviews per week to show you are currently active.

3. Ensure NAP Consistency (Citations)

Google verifies your legitimacy by checking if your data matches across the web.

  • NAP: This stands for Name, Address, Phone number.
  • The Audit: Ensure your NAP is exactly the same on your website, your Google Profile, Yell.com, Checkatrade, and Facebook.
  • The Error: A mismatch as small as “Ltd” vs “Limited” or an old phone number on a directory site can confuse Google’s algorithm and lower your trust score.

4. Build Local Relevance on Your Website

Your Google Profile does not exist in a vacuum; it is tethered to your website.

  • Local Landing Pages: If you serve London, do not just have one “Services” page. Create specific pages like “Boiler Repair in Croydon” or “Emergency Plumber in Ealing”.
  • Embed the Map: On your contact page, embed your official Google Map listing (not just a screenshot). This creates a digital link between your site and your profile.

The Impact of “Proximity”

It is vital to understand that you cannot rank everywhere. Google places a huge weight on the physical distance between the searcher and the business.

According to the Whitespark Local Search Ranking Factors Survey (the industry-standard annual study of local SEO experts):

“Distance to the searcher is the #1 negative ranking factor. If you are too far away, no amount of optimization will help you outrank a closer business.”

Stop trying to rank in a town 20 miles away using just your Google Map profile. Instead, use your Website (Organic SEO) to target those further-out areas using “Location Pages” (e.g., “Plumbing Services in [Town Name]”).
