Why is my CTR lower than expected?

In 2026, a “low” CTR is relative. A 1% CTR in a Display placement might be excellent, while a 1% CTR on a Search ad is a major red flag.

1. The “Intent Mismatch” (Keywords & Negative Keywords)

The most common cause of a low CTR is your ad appearing for the wrong search terms.

  • The Check: Open your Search Terms Report (found under Insights and reports).
  • The Problem: Are your ads showing for “Informational” queries (e.g., “how to fix…”) when you are selling a product? Users looking for info rarely click on “Buy Now” ads.
  • The Fix: Add Negative Keywords to prune out irrelevant traffic. In 2026, adding a price (e.g., “Starting from £99″) directly into the headline can also lower “curiosity” clicks from people who can’t afford you, which lowers CTR but improves conversion quality.

2. Low “Asset Coverage” (Ad Strength)

If your Ad Strength is “Poor” or “Average,” Google’s AI has fewer “puzzle pieces” to work with.

  • The Problem: Google might be forced to show a generic headline because you didn’t provide enough variations that match the user’s specific search.
  • The Fix: Aim for “Excellent” Ad Strength.Ensure you have all 15 headlines and 5 descriptions. Use Dynamic Keyword Insertion (DKI) to make the ad copy automatically match the user’s search term.

3. “Ad Fatigue” & Creative Stagnation

In 2026, AI-driven ads can “burn out” faster because the algorithm tests combinations so rapidly.

  • The Check: Look at your CTR over the last 90 days. Is there a steady downward slope?
  • The Fix: Refresh your Visual Assets (images and videos) every 4–6 weeks. Swap out your “Low” performing text assets (as labeled in the Asset Group > View Details report) with fresh hooks or promotional offers.

3 Technical “Quick Wins” to Boost CTR

  • Add All Ad Assets (Extensions): Sitelinks, Callouts, and Structured Snippets make your ad physically larger on the screen. Sitelinks alone can increase CTR by up to 20%.
  • Use Numbers & Symbols: Headlines like “Save 25% Today” or “4.9/5 Rating” almost always outperform plain text like “High Quality Products.”
  • Check Ad Position: Use the “Top of Page Rate” metric. If your bids are too low, your ad might be appearing at the bottom of the page where it’s rarely seen, leading to a naturally lower CTR.

The “AI Overview” Factor

Important Note: With the rise of AI Overviews (SGE) at the top of Google search results, standard ad CTRs have decreased by roughly 10–15% across the board. If your CTR is lower than last year, it may be due to the “AI box” pushing your ad further down the page.

The Solution: Focus on Image Assets; ads with high-quality visuals are more likely to be featured alongside or within the AI Overview box.
