That’s one of the most common and frustrating questions in Google Ads. When your ad isn’t appearing, it’s almost always due to one or more factors related to budget, bidding, targeting, or quality.
1. Budget and Bidding Issues
These are the most frequent causes of ad visibility problems.
Insufficient Daily Budget: Your campaign may be running out of money before the end of the day.
Check: Look at the Budget column in your Campaigns table. If you see “Limited by budget” in the ‘Status’ or ‘Delivery’ column, your ad is stopping early.
Fix: Increase your daily budget, or switch to a more conservative bidding strategy (like Maximize Clicks with a Max CPC cap) to stretch your budget throughout the day.
Low Bid or Target CPA/ROAS: Your bid or target is too low to win the auction.
Check: Look at your Impression Share Lost (Rank) metric. If this is high, your bids are too low to compete for the ad position you need.
Fix: Increase your manual Max. CPC bid or raise your automated Target CPA or Target ROAS to give the AI more budget flexibility to win impressions.
Billing Issues: Your payment method may have failed, suspending all ads.
Check: Go to Billing > Summary. Look for alerts about an expired card, failed payments, or an account suspension.
2. Targeting and Scheduling Restrictions
If your ad is fine but your audience selection is too narrow, it won’t show.
Narrow Location or Language Targeting:
Check: Go to your Campaign Settings and review your Locations and Languages. If you’re targeting only a small postcode area and a low-volume language, your potential audience size may be zero.
Fix: Expand your geographic targeting, or ensure your Location Options setting is correctly set to “Presence” (for people in your area) if you are a local service business.
Restrictive Ad Schedule (Dayparting):
Check: Go to Ad schedule in the campaign > audience, keywords, and content menu. Your ad may only be set to run during certain hours (e.g., 9 AM to 5 PM) or on specific days, so if you’re searching outside that window, it won’t appear.
Fix: Adjust your schedule or ensure you are searching within the scheduled time.
Audience or Demographic Exclusions: You might be excluding yourself!
Check: Look at your Audience and Demographics exclusions. You might have mistakenly excluded your age group, device type, or a large segment of users.
3. Account and Ad Status
Simple status checks can often reveal the problem instantly.
Campaign/Ad Group/Ad is Paused or Removed:
Check: In the Campaigns, Ad Groups, or Ads table, check the Status column. Ensure the status is “Eligible” or “Active.” If it says “Paused” or “Removed,” your ad won’t run.
Ad Disapproved: Your ad copy, landing page, or assets may have violated a Google policy.
Check: Go to the Ads & assets tab. The Status column for the ad will say “Disapproved” or “Limited.”
Fix: Click on the disapproval reason and follow Google’s instructions to edit the ad or fix the landing page content.
Keywords Have Low Search Volume:
Check: Go to the Keywords tab. If a keyword’s Status says “Low search volume,” it means that term isn’t searched enough for the ad to show consistently, or at all.
Fix: Remove the low-volume keyword and replace it with more popular, broader search terms.
4. Quality Score and Search Method
Very Low Quality Score (QS): Your ad is deemed irrelevant, making it prohibitively expensive to show.
Check: Look at the Keywords table and add the Quality Score column. If your score is 3/10 or lower, your ads will struggle to show, even with high bids.
Fix: Improve your ad relevance by writing copy that closely matches the keyword and ensure your landing page content is highly relevant.
You Are Searching Too Much: The Ad Preview and Diagnosis Tool is the only reliable way to check if your ad is showing.
Warning: If you repeatedly search for your own ads, Google will stop showing them to you (to save you money on wasted impressions) and it can artificially lower your Click-Through Rate (CTR).
Solution: Go to Tools & Settings ($\mathbf{\bullet}$) $\rightarrow$ Planning $\rightarrow$ Ad Preview and Diagnosis. Enter the keyword, location, and language to see an accurate preview of your ad’s status.
