How do I upload image assets to a PMax campaign?

Image assets are vital for PMax as they allow Google’s AI to create visually rich ads across the Display Network, YouTube, Discover, and Gmail. You upload images within the Asset Group during campaign setup or later editing.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Access the Image Editor

  1. In the Images section of the Asset Group editor, click the blue + Images button.

  2. This will open a pop-up window where you can select or upload your images.

Step 3: Choose Your Upload Method

You have four main ways to bring images into your asset library:

Upload Method

Description

Upload

Drag and drop files from your computer or click to select them. This is the most common method for new assets.

Website scan

Google scans your website’s landing page (Final URL) and suggests images it finds there.

Asset library

Select images you have previously uploaded and used in other campaigns.

Stock images

Search through a library of free, high-quality stock photos provided by Google.

Step 4: Crop and Save

  1. After uploading or selecting an image, a preview will appear, and you’ll be prompted to crop it for the required aspect ratios.

  2. Crop for Required Sizes: Every image you upload should ideally be cropped and saved for the main three ratios:

    • Landscape (1.91:1)

    • Square (1:1)

    • Portrait (4:5) (Optional, but highly recommended)

  3. Click Save once you’ve confirmed the crops.

Step 5: Complete the Asset Group

  1. Repeat the process until you have uploaded all your images, including your logos.

  2. Once complete, click the Save Asset Group or Save Campaign button.

Image Asset Specifications (Must-Knows)

For PMax to work across all its channels, you must provide images in specific aspect ratios. The more images you provide, the better the AI can test and optimise.

  • File Format: JPG or PNG

  • Max File Size: 5120 KB (5 MB)

  • Safe Area: Ensure your important content (like product/text) is placed within the centre 80% of the image to prevent cropping on different devices.

Our Advice: Diversity is Power

  • Fill the Slots: While only one image is technically required for the two main sizes, you should aim to upload at least 4-6 unique images for both the Landscape and Square ratios. This gives the AI ample variety to test and find the best performing creative.

  • Clean vs. Promotional: Provide a mix of assets: some clean, high-resolution product/service shots without any text overlays, and some that include a small, clear promotional overlay (like “20% Off”). Google can then test which style performs better.

  • Theme Consistency: Ensure all images in a single Asset Group are related to the same theme, product, or service (e.g., don’t mix images of plumbing services with images of kitchen installations in the same Asset Group).
