How do I verify that the tag is firing correctly?

Verifying that the Google tag is firing correctly is essential for accurate conversion tracking and data collection. The most reliable tool for this is Google Tag Assistant, which works alongside the Preview and Debug mode in Google Tag Manager (GTM).

Here are the step-by-step methods for verifying your tag installation.

Google Tag Assistant is the primary tool Google provides to check and troubleshoot tag implementation on your site.

Step 1: Connect Tag Assistant

  1. Go to the Google Tag Assistant website (or the equivalent section within your Google Tag Manager or Google Ads account).

  2. Click Add domain or Connect.

  3. Enter the full URL of your website and click Connect.

  4. Tag Assistant will open your website in a new window in debug mode.

Step 2: Test and Review the Data

  1. Interact with the Site: Perform actions on your website, such as navigating to different pages or triggering the conversions you want to track (e.g., submitting a contact form, clicking a phone number).

  2. Monitor the Debug Window: Switch back to the Tag Assistant window. On the left side, you will see a summary of events (e.g., Page View, Click, Form Submit).

  3. Verify the Tag: Click on any event. In the right-hand panel, look for the Tags Fired section.

    • Success: Your Google Tag ID (e.g., AW-123456789) should appear here, confirming the tag is firing correctly on that specific page or action.

Step 3: Check the Summary

  • Once you’re finished testing, click Stop Debugging. The final Tag Assistant Report will show a summary of all pages visited and confirm the status of your Google Tag (Green, Yellow, or Red status icons indicate good, warning, or error states, respectively).
