How do I edit live ad text?

Editing a live Responsive Search Ad (RSA) is a straightforward process, but it is important to understand what happens when you make a change. Unlike the old Expanded Text Ads, you don’t typically edit a single line of static text; instead, you manage the pool of assets (headlines and descriptions) that Google uses to build the ad.

Here is the detailed, step-by-step process.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Navigate to the Ads Section

  1. Sign in to your Google Ads account.

  2. In the left-hand navigation menu, click Campaigns > Ads..

  3. Make sure your view is filtered to the correct Campaign and Ad Group where your RSA is located.

Step 2: Open the Ad Editor

  1. Find the Responsive Search Ad you want to modify in the list.

  2. Hover your mouse over the ad name.

  3. Click the pencil icon that appears, then select Edit.

Step 3: Edit Your Assets

You will be taken to the RSA creation screen where you can manage your headlines and descriptions.

  • To Edit an Existing Asset:

    • Click on the specific headline or description you want to change.

    • Edit the text directly in the box.

    • Note: If you are making a major change to an existing asset, it is often better to follow the ‘Replacement Strategy’ below.

  • To Add a New Asset:

    • Click the Add Headline or Add Description buttons.

    • Enter your new, fresh copy.

  • To Remove a Poor-Performing Asset:

    • Hover over the asset you want to remove.

    • Click the trash can icon next to the asset.

    • Confirm the removal in the pop-up box.

Step 4: Save the New Version

  1. Once you have finished making changes (adding, editing, or removing assets), click the blue Save ad button at the bottom right.

Important Note: What Happens When You Edit

When you save changes to a Responsive Search Ad (RSA) in the Google Ads interface, you do not restart the ad’s learning completely.

  • New Ad Version: Google creates a new version of the ad with the updated asset pool.

  • Ad Review: The new version goes through the standard ad approval process, which usually takes up to one business day.Your old ad continues to run until the new version is approved.

  • Data Preservation: Performance data for all previous versions of the ad is preserved. When you look at the ad’s overall performance metrics (Impressions, Clicks, Conversions), the numbers will reflect the life of the ad across all its versions.
