How do I fix a website showing a blank page?

A completely blank webpage can be caused by a PHP error, plugin or theme conflict, memory limitation, broken custom code or another server-side problem.

1. Check whether the entire website is affected

Open the homepage and several other pages.

If only one page is blank, focus your investigation on that page and any recent changes made to it.

If the entire website is blank, investigate WordPress, plugins, themes, PHP and the hosting environment.

2. Check recent changes

Think about what happened immediately before the blank page appeared.

Common triggers include:

  • Installing or updating a plugin
  • Changing a theme
  • Updating WordPress
  • Adding custom PHP or JavaScript
  • Changing server settings

If the problem started immediately after a change, investigate that change first.

3. Test for a plugin conflict

If you can access the WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins → Installed Plugins and deactivate recently installed or updated plugins.

If the website becomes available, reactivate plugins individually and test after each activation to identify the likely cause.

If you cannot access the dashboard, your hosting control panel or file manager may provide another way to deactivate a plugin, depending on your hosting setup.

4. Check the theme

If the problem began after a theme change, temporarily switch to a suitable default WordPress theme if you can access the dashboard.

If the website works after changing themes, investigate the previous theme and its customisations.

5. Check PHP errors and logs

Check your hosting provider’s PHP error logs, server logs or WordPress debugging information.

An error message can identify the plugin, theme or code responsible for the failure.

Avoid displaying detailed error messages publicly on a production website because they may reveal technical information.

6. Check hosting resources

A website can also fail if it reaches available server or PHP resource limits.

Check your hosting account for resource warnings and contact the provider if you cannot determine whether the server environment is causing the problem.

7. Restore backup

If the problem cannot be resolved and you have a recent backup from before the failure, restoration may be appropriate.

Identify what caused the problem before repeating the change that triggered it.
