SSL is commonly used to describe the certificate that enables HTTPS on a website. HTTPS encrypts data transferred between a visitor’s browser and your website and helps protect information while it is in transit.
1. Check whether HTTPS is already enabled
Open your website using https:// rather than http://.
If the website loads securely and the browser shows the expected security indicator, an SSL/TLS certificate may already be installed.
2. Check your hosting provider
Many hosting providers offer SSL/TLS certificates as part of their hosting service. Log in to your hosting control panel and look for SSL, SSL/TLS, Security, or a similar option.
Follow the provider’s instructions for activating a certificate for your domain.
3. Install or activate the certificate
If your hosting provider supplies a certificate, activation may be automatic or require you to select your domain.
If you are using a certificate from another certificate authority, follow the provider’s installation instructions for your hosting environment.
The certificate must cover the domain names visitors use to access your website.
4. Make sure your website uses HTTPS
After the certificate is active, check that the website loads correctly using https://.
If your website is still accessible through HTTP, configure an appropriate redirect from HTTP to HTTPS through your hosting platform or web server.
5. Check for mixed content
After enabling HTTPS, some pages may still request images, scripts, stylesheets or other resources using http://.
These mixed-content references can cause browser warnings or prevent some resources from loading correctly.
Update affected resource URLs to use HTTPS where appropriate.
