Why are old images still showing on my website?

If an old image continues to appear after you replace or delete it, the website may still be serving a cached version. The old image may also be referenced somewhere else on the website.

1. Confirm the image was replaced

Open the page in your website editor or CMS and check that the new image is actually selected.

Save or publish the page after making the change.

2. Check the image URL

If you replaced an image but kept the same file URL, a cached copy of the old file may still be available.

If the old image has a different filename or URL, check that the page is actually referencing the new file rather than an older image stored elsewhere.

3. Clear your website cache

Your website may use caching through a WordPress plugin, hosting provider or CDN.

Purge the relevant cache and reload the page. If several caching systems are being used, check each one.

4. Check your browser cache

Your browser may still have the old image stored locally.

Try opening the page in a private or incognito window. You can also test the page from another device or browser.

If the new image appears elsewhere, the problem may be local browser caching.

5. Check responsive image versions

WordPress and other systems can create multiple image sizes for responsive display.

Inspect the page and check whether the browser is loading an older or different image resource through attributes such as srcset or sizes.

6. Check other website locations

The old image may still be used in another part of the website, such as:

  • Header or footer
  • Navigation
  • Sidebar
  • Blog post
  • Homepage section
  • Background image
  • Theme settings
  • Page builder template

Search the relevant content or media settings if you cannot identify where the image is coming from.
