Adding social media links to your website allows visitors to find your official profiles and follow or contact your business on the platforms you use.
1. List your official social profiles
Identify the social media accounts you actively use for your business. Only include profiles that are current and that you intend visitors to access.
Make sure each profile is the correct official account before adding its link.
2. Add the profile URLs
In your website builder, add each social media profile URL to a text link, icon, button or other suitable element.
For example:
Instagram icon → your official Instagram profile
On a custom website, a basic link can be added using HTML:
<a href=”https://www.example.com/your-profile”>Instagram</a>
Replace the example address with the actual profile URL.
3. Use recognisable icons or labels
Social media icons can make links easy to identify, but they should still be understandable to visitors using assistive technology.
If an icon is used without visible text, provide an appropriate accessible name, such as Instagram or LinkedIn, so its purpose is clear.
4. Choose useful locations
Common locations for social media links include:
Website header
Footer
Contact page
About page
Relevant social or community sections
The footer is often useful when you want the links available throughout the website without making them a primary navigation item.
5. Open links appropriately
Decide whether visitors should remain on your website or open the social platform separately. If links open in a new tab or window, make sure the behaviour is intentional and does not interfere with navigation or accessibility.
