Once you have decided which pages belong in your website navigation, you can create the menu and connect each item to the correct page.
1. Create the main menu
In your website builder or content management system, find the navigation or menu settings and create a new menu.
Add the main pages visitors need, such as:
Home | Services | About | FAQs | Contact
The exact steps will depend on the platform you use.
2. Add links to the correct pages
Each menu item should take visitors directly to the relevant page.
For example:
Services → /services/
About → /about/
Contact → /contact/
Check every link after creating the menu.
3. Create dropdown menus when needed
If a section has several related pages, place those pages under a parent menu item.
Example:
Services
Website Design
Website Development
Website Maintenance
Use dropdowns only when they make related pages easier to access.
4. Add the menu to your website header
Place the main navigation where visitors expect to find it, usually in the website header.
Make sure it remains easy to identify and use across your main pages.
5. Create the mobile version
Your desktop navigation may need a different presentation on smaller screens, such as a menu button that opens the navigation.
Check that visitors can open the menu, select links and close it easily.
6. Highlight the current page
Where your website platform supports it, use a visual indication to show which page the visitor is currently viewing.
For example, the Services menu item can appear visually different when the visitor is on the Services page.
This helps visitors understand where they are within the website.
7. Test every menu item
Before publishing or after making changes, test the menu on desktop and mobile.
Check:
Every link opens the correct page.
Dropdowns work correctly.
The mobile menu opens and closes.
The menu is usable with a keyboard where applicable.
No important page is accidentally inaccessible.
