Why Is My Campaign “Limited By Budget”?
The “Limited by budget” status means your campaign’s average daily budget is lower than the amount Google recommends to fully capture all the available search traffic that is relevant to your keywords and targeting settings.
When a campaign is “limited by budget,” your ads won’t show as often as they could, leading to missed opportunities for clicks and conversions. Google addresses this limitation through a process called “budget pacing” or “under-delivery,” where your ads are slowed down or stopped early.
What Happens When a Campaign is Limited?
The campaign system employs a few tactics to stretch your budget:
- Ads Stop Early: Your campaign may spend its entire daily budget before the end of the day, causing your ads to stop showing for the most lucrative hours.
- Auction Under-delivery: Google may choose to reduce the frequency of your ad showings or bid less aggressively in auctions, causing your ad to show in lower positions or lose to competitors, even on high-value searches. This is done to make the budget last longer.
- Missing Out on Valuable Traffic: Crucially, the campaign misses out on valuable clicks that occur later in the day or during competitive periods, ultimately restricting your potential conversion volume.
How to Resolve the “Limited by Budget” Status
There are two primary ways to fix this status, depending on your financial constraints:
1. Increase Your Budget (The Best Solution)
The most effective fix is to increase your average daily budget to the level Google recommends.
- Where to Check: Google often provides a recommended budget amount right next to the “Limited by budget” status in the campaign overview table.
- Action: Increase the budget gradually until the “Limited by budget” status disappears. This gives your automated bidding strategies (like Target CPA or Maximize Conversions) the freedom they need to bid competitively throughout the entire day.
2. Change Your Bidding Strategy (If Budget is Fixed)
If you cannot increase your daily spend, you need to change your bidding strategy to be more efficient with the budget you have.
- Switch to Maximize Clicks with a Cap: If you are using a strategy like Maximize Conversions (no target), it will often spend aggressively. Switching to Maximize Clicks and setting a low Max. CPC bid limit will force Google to get you cheaper clicks, making your fixed budget last longer.
- Lower Your Target CPA/ROAS: If you are using Target CPA or Target ROAS, the system might be trying to bid too high to achieve a costly target. By slightly lowering your Target CPA or raising your Target ROAS, you tell the AI to be more cautious with its bidding, which conserves the budget.
