Why is my traffic dropping in Google Analytics?

1. The “Consent Mode” Effect (Crucial for UK/EU)

If you operate in the UK or Europe, the most common cause of a sudden 20 – 50% drop is Cookie Consent.

Since March 2024 (Consent Mode v2), Google has become stricter. If a user clicks “Reject All” on your cookie banner, GA4 is legally required to stop tracking that user entirely.

  • The Symptom: Your traffic drops, but your sales/leads remain steady. This means you still have the customers; you just can’t “see” them in the data.
  • The Fix: You must implement Consent Mode v2 (Advanced). This allows Google to send “cookieless pings” (anonymous signals) for rejected users, which GA4 then uses to “model” (guess) the missing traffic, restoring your numbers.

2. The “Unassigned” Traffic Leak

Sometimes your traffic hasn’t dropped; it has just been mislabelled. In GA4, if Google loses track of a user’s source, it dumps them into a category called “Unassigned”.

  • Go to Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition.
  • Look for the row “Unassigned”.
  • If this row has spiked while “Organic Search” has dropped, you have a tracking error, not a ranking problem.
  • Common Causes:
    • Missing Session Start: Your developer might be firing events before the Google Tag has fully loaded.
    • UTM Errors: You are using non-standard UTM tags (e.g., utm_source=email_newsletter instead of utm_source=email).

3. Algorithm Updates vs. Technical Bugs

You must determine if the drop is Real (Google hates your site) or Technical (GA4 is broken). You do this by comparing GA4 against Google Search Console (GSC).

  • Scenario A: GA4 is down, but GSC is flat/stable.
    • Diagnosis: Tracking Code Broken. You likely deleted the tag during a website update, or a plugin is conflicting.
  • Scenario B: Both GA4 and GSC are down.
    • Diagnosis: SEO Penalty. You have lost rankings due to a Core Update or technical SEO error (like accidentally setting your site to noindex).

4. Aggressive Bot Filtering

If you recently switched from Universal Analytics (UA) to GA4, your traffic will almost always look lower.

  • The Reason: UA was notorious for counting “spam bots” as real users. GA4 has far stricter, automatic bot exclusion that you cannot turn off.
  • The Reality: You haven’t lost real people; you have just stopped counting the robots. This is a “Quality Correction,” giving you a more accurate view of actual potential customers.

5. Data Thresholding (The Orange Triangle)

GA4 protects user privacy by hiding data if the sample size is too small.

You look at a report for a specific day or page, and the data is zero or surprisingly low.

  • The Check: Look at the top right of the chart. Do you see an orange warning triangle?
  • The Meaning: “Google Signal” data is enabled, so Google is hiding rows with low user counts to prevent you from identifying individuals.
  • The Fix: Go to Admin > Data Collection > Data Signals and temporarily disable “Include Google Signals in Reporting Identity” to see the raw (unsampled) data.
