The Disavow Tool is part of Google Search Console (GSC) and is used to tell Google to ignore specific incoming links to your website. This is a powerful, yet delicate, procedure. It should only be used as a last resort to address a potential or active Manual Action penalty from Google or if you have strong evidence of a large-scale negative SEO attack.
Step 1: Identifying Spam Links (The Optimal Audit)
Before disavowing, you must first definitively identify which links are spammy or toxic. Disavowing good links will harm your SEO.
Indicator | Description | Actionable Diagnosis |
Link Source Relevance | The site is completely unrelated to your industry (e.g., foreign gambling or pharma sites linking to a digital strategy firm). | Low Relevance: High risk for being spam. |
Anchor Text | The link uses overly optimized, aggressive, non-brand anchor text (e.g., “cheap strategy consultant 100% discount”) or non-contextual foreign characters. | Aggressive/Spammy: High risk for being toxic. |
Domain Authority (DA/DR) | The linking site has extremely low, often zero, Domain Authority or Domain Rating. | Low Quality: High risk for being worthless or spam. |
Bulk Acquisition | Hundreds or thousands of links pointing to your site suddenly appeared from low-quality domains. | Negative SEO Attack: Requires prompt action. |
Our Rule: Do not disavow links just because they have low authority. Only disavow links that are demonstrably toxic, spammy, or unnatural and are likely hurting your ranking.
Step 2: Preparing the Disavow File
The Disavow File must be a specific format for Google to accept it.
- Create a List: Compile a comprehensive list of every toxic domain or specific URL you want to disavow.
- Use a Text File: The file must be a plain text file (.txt) encoded in UTF-8 or 7-bit ASCII.
- Format Correctly:
- To disavow a specific URL, use the full URL: https://spam-site.com/spam-page-1.html
- To disavow an entire domain (recommended for large attacks), use domain: followed by the domain: domain:spam-site.com
- Add Comments (Optional but Recommended): You can use the hashtag symbol (#) at the start of a line to add notes to yourself. Google ignores these. # Unnatural links identified via Semrush on 2025-11-13
Step 3: Submitting the File to Google
The Disavow Tool is accessed via Google Search Console.
- Navigate to the Tool: Search Google for the “Google Disavow Tool” or navigate directly to the correct GSC page for your property.
- Select Your Property: Choose the correct website property (e.g., https://utds.io/).
- Upload the .txt File: Click “Choose File” and upload the .txt list you created in Step 2.
- Confirmation: Google will confirm the upload. You will not receive immediate feedback, as Google processes the disavow file over the coming weeks, not instantly.
Crucial Warning: The Disavow Tool should be used with extreme caution. If you are not certain, consult a technical SEO expert like UTDS Optimal Choice before proceeding. Misusing this tool can permanently damage your ranking performance.
Step 4: Monitoring After Disavowal
- Wait Patiently: It can take several weeks for Google to fully crawl the web, process your file, and exclude those links from passing authority.
- Monitor GSC: After the waiting period, check the GSC Links report. While the total link count may not immediately drop, the authority passed from those domains should be ignored by Google.
- Check Manual Actions: If you were disavowing to clear a Manual Action, you must submit a Reconsideration Request in GSC after the disavow file has been uploaded and processed.
