How do I check my current backlinks?

A backlink profile is the total collection of external links pointing to your website. Regular analysis is crucial for determining your site’s authority, identifying toxic links, and benchmarking against competitors. There are two primary methods for comprehensive backlink auditing.

Method 1: The Authoritative Source (Google Search Console)

Google Search Console (GSC) is the most reliable source for backlinks, as it shows the links Google actually uses for crawling and ranking your site.

What it Shows

Optimal Use for UTDS Clients

GSC to Links Report

Lists the total number of external links, the Top Linking Sites (domains providing the most links), and the Top Linked Pages (pages receiving the most links).

Link Health Check: Use this to identify the highest-value links you have. If a key page isn’t getting links, you know where to focus internal linking.

Export Data

GSC allows you to download a comprehensive list of all external links found.

Disavow File Creation: The downloaded list is the starting point for checking for spammy or toxic links you may need to Disavow (tell Google to ignore).

GSC Limitation: GSC is backward-looking and often incomplete. It only shows links Google chooses to share, not necessarily all links pointing to your site. You cannot rely on GSC alone for competitive analysis.

Method 2: The Comprehensive Source (Third-Party Tools)

Specialized SEO tools maintain massive, constantly updated indexes of the web, providing a much broader, more real-time view of your complete link profile and your competitors’ links.

Ahrefs

Largest link index; excellent competitor analysis features.

Competitive Gap Analysis: See exactly where your top UK competitors are getting links that you are not, informing your outreach strategy.

Semrush

Strong link auditing and toxic link identification.

Toxicity Audit: Use the Backlink Audit Tool to flag risky, spammy, or low-quality links that could potentially harm your SEO performance.

Moz Link Explorer

Focuses on Domain Authority (DA) and Page Authority (PA) metrics.

Quality Assessment: Use these metrics to quickly vet the authority of a linking website before pursuing a partnership or link.

Key Metrics for Optimal Link Profile Analysis

When reviewing your backlink report, UTDS Optimal Choice recommends focusing on quality over quantity by evaluating these metrics:

  • Domain Authority (DA) / Domain Rating (DR): This score (from third-party tools) predicts how likely a website is to rank. Higher is better. Prioritize links from sites with high DA/DR.
  • Relevance: Is the linking website topically related to your business (e.g., a digital marketing blog linking to a strategy consultant)? Relevant links pass more authority.
  • Anchor Text: The clickable text used for the link. It should be natural, varied, and not overly aggressive with keyword stuffing.
  • nofollow vs. dofollow: A dofollow link passes link equity (PageRank). A nofollow link tells Google not to pass authority, but it is still valuable for traffic and diversity. An optimal profile has a mix of both.
