How do I add FAQs that show in search results?

To get your Frequently Asked Questions to appear directly on the Google Search results page (as a dropdown menu under your blue link), you cannot simply type questions and answers on your page. You must use a specific code called FAQ Schema Markup (JSON-LD).

This “Rich Result” is incredibly powerful because it increases your “pixel real estate” on the search screen, pushing competitors further down the page. It also allows voice assistants (like Google Assistant) to read your answers aloud.

Method 1: The WordPress Plugin Method (Easiest)

If your website is built on WordPress, you likely do not need to touch any code. The major SEO plugins handle this automatically via the “Block Editor.”

  • Install: Ensure you have Yoast SEO or RankMath installed.
  • Edit Page: Open the page where you want the FAQs.
  • Add Block: Click the “+” button to add a new block and search for “FAQ”.
  • Type: Enter your questions and answers into this specific block (not a standard paragraph block).

Behind the scenes, the plugin automatically wraps this text in the correct valid JSON-LD code that Google requires.

Method 2: The Manual JSON-LD Method (For All Sites)

If you do not use WordPress, or if you want custom control, you can generate the code yourself and paste it into your site’s header or body.

The Strategy:

  • Write: Write your FAQs on your visible webpage first.
  • Generate: Go to a free tool like the Merkle Schema Markup Generator or https://www.google.com/search?q=TechnicalSEO.com.
  • Select: Choose “FAQ Page” from the dropdown.
  • Copy: Paste your exact questions and answers into the tool. It will produce a script that looks like this:
📋
filename.json
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "FAQPage",
  "mainEntity": [{
    "@type": "Question",
    "name": "Do you offer free quotes?",
    "acceptedAnswer": {
      "@type": "Answer",
      "text": "Yes, we provide free, no-obligation quotes for all local jobs."
    }
  }]
}
</script>
  • Paste: Place this code into the <head> or <body> of your specific HTML page.

Strict Google Guidelines (The “Don’ts”)

Google is very strict about who gets to have these rich snippets. If you violate these rules, they will disable snippets for your entire site.

The Rules:

  • Valid Use: The FAQ Page markup must be used for a page where the site itself provides the answers (e.g., a product FAQ or support page).
  • Invalid Use: You cannot use it for a forum page where users submit answers.
  • Consistency: The content in the code must match the visible text on the page exactly. You cannot hide keywords in the code that aren’t visible to the human user.
  • No Advertising: The FAQ content must not be purely promotional.

How to Validate Your Code

Just because you added the code doesn’t mean it works. One missing comma will break the entire feature.

  • Go to: The Google Rich Results Test.
  • Enter URL: Paste the specific page URL you just edited.
  • Run Test: If successful, you will see a green checkmark labeled “FAQ detected”.
  • Preview: Click “Preview Results” to see exactly how it will look in Google Search.
