How do I create location-specific landing pages?

Since you typically cannot rank in the Local Map Pack for towns where you don’t have a physical office, you must rely on Location Pages (also known as “Service Area Pages”) to rank in the standard organic search results below the maps.

However, doing this incorrectly can trigger a “Doorway Page” penalty. Follow this strategy to build pages that rank safely and convert visitors.

1. Avoid the “Find and Replace” Trap

The biggest mistake businesses make is creating 50 pages that are identical, except for the town name (e.g., “Best Plumber in Leeds” vs “Best Plumber in Bradford“).

  • Google classifies these as “Doorway Pages” low-quality pages created solely for search engines, not humans. They are frequently de-indexed.
  • You must write unique content for each page. Aim for at least 50–60% unique text on every location page.

2. Inject “Local Flavour”

To prove to Google (and the user) that the page is genuinely relevant to that specific town, you need to include specific local details.

  • Mention Landmarks: “Our team frequently works near the Bullring Shopping Centre and attends call-outs along the A38.”
  • Local Case Studies: “We recently installed a new combi-boiler for a detached home in Sutton Coldfield, resolving their low-pressure issues.”
  • Specific Reviews: Embed a testimonial from a customer in that town. “Great service!” – Sarah, Solihull.

3. Structure Your URLs Cleanly

Keep your URL structure logical and hierarchical.

  • Option A (Flat): example.com/plumber-bristol
  • Option B (Folder – Recommended): example.com/locations/bristol
    • Why: This keeps your analytics tidy and tells Google these pages are part of a specific “Locations” section of your site.

4. Link to Them (Don’t Hide Them)

A page cannot rank if Google cannot find it.

  • The Footer: Include a “Areas We Cover” section in your footer with links to your top 5–10 priority towns.
  • The Menu: If you have many locations, create a main “Locations” page that lists them all, and link to that page from your main navigation menu.

The “Doorway Page” Danger

It is critical to understand the line between “Local SEO” and “Spam.”

Google’s Spam Policies explicitly define “Doorway Pages” as a violation:

“Pages having multiple domain names or pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page… are bad for users because they can lead to multiple similar pages in user search results.”

If you cannot write unique, helpful content for a town, do not create a page for it. It is better to have 5 amazing pages for your top areas than 50 thin, spammy pages that drag your whole site down.
