The homepage is usually the most powerful page on your website. However, you should not try to rank it for every service you offer.
The Golden Rule: Your homepage should target your Primary Brand and your Broadest Category (e.g., “Plumber in Bristol” or “Digital Marketing Agency London”). Specific services (like “Boiler Repair” or “PPC Management”) belong on their own dedicated pages.
Follow this “top-down” structure to place keywords where Google values them most.
1. The Title Tag (The Most Critical Spot)
This is the blue clickable link that appears in Google search results. It is the single strongest ranking signal on your page.
- The Formula: [Primary Keyword] – [Location] | [Brand Name]
- Example: Website Design & Development Agency | UTDS Optimal Choice
- Mistake to Avoid: Do not just write “Home” or “Welcome to our Website”. This tells Google nothing.
2. The H1 Header (The Headline)
This is the main headline visible on the page itself. Google uses this to confirm the page’s topic.
- Placement: It must be at the very top of the page.
- The Strategy: Include your main keyword naturally.
- Bad: “Welcome to Smith’s.”
- Good: “Reliable Plumbing Services in Bristol.”
- Rule: You should have only one H1 tag per page.
3. The “Hero” Content (First 200 Words)
Google places more weight on the text at the top of the page than the text at the bottom.
- The Action: Ensure your primary keyword (and a variation of it) appears in the first paragraph.
- Context: Explain who you are, what you do, and where you do it immediately.
- Example: “Smith’s is a family-run plumbing company serving Bristol and Bath…”
- Example: “Smith’s is a family-run plumbing company serving Bristol and Bath…”
4. Image Alt Text
Google cannot “see” images; it reads the text attached to them.
- The Action: Rename your main image file before you upload it.
- Instead of: IMG_1234.jpg
- Use: plumber-fixing-boiler-bristol.jpg
- The Tag: Add “Alt Text” in your website editor that describes the image using your keyword naturally.
5. The Footer (Location Signals)
Do not stuff keywords here, but do use it for Location Relevance.
- The Action: Include your full physical address.
- The Keyword: “Proudly serving Bristol, Bath, and South Gloucestershire.”
- Why: This reinforces your geographic ranking radius on every page of your site.
“Keyword Stuffing” vs. “Prominence”
It is vital to distinguish between placing a keyword strategically and “stuffing” it.
Google’s Spam Policies explicitly warn against:
“Lists of phone numbers without substantial added value… or blocks of text listing cities and states a webpage is trying to rank for.”
If you write “Plumber Bristol Plumber Bristol Best Plumber” at the bottom of your page, you risk a penalty. If you write “We are the leading plumbers in Bristol,” that is natural and effective.
