How do I write title tags for local search?

Title tags are one of the most important on-page SEO factors, telling both search engines and users what the page is about. For local search, your title tag needs to clearly communicate three things: the service, the location, and your brand name.

Optimal Structure for Local Title Tags

The most effective structure for a local search title tag places the highest-value terms first, as these carry the most weight.

Best Practices for Local Title Tags

1. Keep it Concise (Length)

  • Limit: Aim to keep your title tag under 60 characters (around 50-60 characters is safe). Google often truncates titles that are too long, replacing the end with an ellipsis.
  • Check Snippet: Focus on ensuring the most important information (Keyword and Location) is visible before the truncation point.

2. Match Intent and Keyword

  • Specific Keywords: Use the specific keywords a local customer would use. For service pages, match the title tag to the page’s content.
    • Example: For a page about Local SEO services, use: Local SEO Services | East London | Brand Name
  • Commercial Intent: If possible, include words that imply immediate need or high commercial intent, such as “Local SEO,” “Best,” “Trusted,” or “Near Me” (if appropriate and naturally integrated).

3. Use Separators (Pipes)

  • Use the pipe character (|) to visually separate the three main components (Keyword, Location, Brand). This makes the title clean and easy for both users and search engines to parse. Avoid using too many different punctuation marks.

4. Ensure Uniqueness

  • Avoid Duplication: Every page on your website should have a unique title tag. If you have two location pages, their titles must reflect the different locations.
    • Bad Example: Local SEO Services | London | Brand Name (Used for both North and South London pages).
    • Good Example: Local SEO | North London | Brand Name AND Local SEO Services | South London | Brand Name

5. Avoid Keyword Stuffing

  • No Listing: Do not simply list keywords without context. Google views this as spam, which can harm your rankings.
    • Bad Example: local SEO services, local services, SEO services near me | Brand Name

By focusing on this structure, you create a title tag that is both highly relevant to Google’s ranking algorithms and highly clickable for local customers.
