The most common frustration for local businesses is ranking #1 in their home town but disappearing completely from the map just 3 miles down the road.
This happens because of a specific Google ranking factor called Proximity. Google Maps is designed to show the “nearest” option, not necessarily the “best” option in the wider county.
1. The “Proximity” Barrier
Google’s algorithm draws a tight invisible circle around your verified physical address.
- In dense areas (like London or Birmingham), this circle might only be 1–2 miles wide.
- You cannot “optimise” your Google Business Profile to force it to rank in a town 10 miles away. If a searcher in that town searches for “Plumber near me”, Google will always show them a plumber who is physically located in that town, not you.
2. The “Service Area” Misconception
Many business owners believe that adding a list of 20 towns to the “Service Areas” section of their profile will make them rank in those towns.
- This setting is purely visual. It draws a red outline on the map for users to see where you travel.
- It does not influence rankings. Adding “Bristol” to your service area when you are based in Bath will not help you rank in Bristol.
3. The Solution: “Location Pages”
Since you cannot use your Map profile to rank in the next town, you must use your Website. This is called “Organic Local SEO”.
Create dedicated landing pages for each target town:
- Create a page like yourwebsite.co.uk/locations/solihull-plumber.
- Do not just copy-paste your homepage text. Write unique content about that specific area (e.g., “We have served Solihull for 10 years, covering shifts near the Touchwood Centre…”).
- When someone in Solihull searches, your website page will appear in the normal text results below the map pack, even if your map listing is absent.
4. The “Vicinity Update” (Context)
In late 2021, Google rolled out the “Vicinity Update”. This algorithm update specifically targeted businesses that were ranking too far away from their office. It made the “ranking radius” smaller and tighter, making it even harder to rank in neighbouring towns without a physical address there.
