Why are conversions not recording in Google Ads?

When conversions stop or never start recording, it’s rarely just a “glitch” it’s almost always a breakdown in the technical path between the user’s click and your server.

Why Are Conversions Not Recording?

If you are seeing clicks and spend but zero conversions in your reports, follow this “Outside-In” diagnostic path to find the break.

1. Check the “Tracking Status” First

Before looking at code, check Google’s own status report:

  • Path: Goals > Conversions > Summary.

  • Status: Unverified: This means Google hasn’t seen the tag fire yet. It usually takes up to 24 hours after the first real conversion for this to change.

  • Status: No Recent Conversions: The tag was working, but hasn’t fired in the last 7 days. This is normal if you have low traffic, but a red flag for high-volume accounts.

  • Status: Tag Inactive: Google can no longer find the tag on your site.

2. The “GTM Publication” Error (Most Common)

If you use Google Tag Manager (GTM), the most frequent mistake is forgetting to push your changes live.

  • The Fix: Open GTM and check the top right. If it says “Workspace Changes: 5” (or any number), your tags are sitting in a draft. You must click Submit and Publish for Google Ads to start receiving data.

3. The “GA4 Delay” Trap

In 2026, many advertisers mistakenly use GA4 (Google Analytics 4) as their primary conversion source.

  • The Problem: GA4 data is not real-time; it can have a 6 to 18-hour delay before it appears in Google Ads.

  • The 2026 Recommendation: Use the Google Ads Native Tag for bidding. It provides real-time signals that help Smart Bidding react instantly to the auction.

4. The “GCLID” Stripping Issue

Google Ads identifies a visitor using a parameter called a GCLID (Google Click ID) attached to the end of your URL.

  • The Problem: Some website firewalls or “clean URL” plugins automatically strip this parameter (e.g., they change site.com/?gclid=123 to just site.com).

  • How to Test: Click one of your live ads. Once the page loads, look at the URL bar. If you don’t see gclid= or wbraid=, your website is “deleting” the tracking ID.

5. Consent Mode & Ad Blockers

With the strict privacy regulations of 2026, Consent Mode is often the culprit.

  • The Problem: If your “Cookie Banner” isn’t configured correctly, or if the user clicks “Reject All,” the conversion tag is legally blocked from firing.

  • The Fix: Use the Tag Assistant (debug mode) to see if ad_storage is being “Granted” or “Denied” when you interact with your cookie banner.

The “Live Click” Rule

A conversion will only show in Google Ads if it was preceded by a paid ad click. If you visit your site organically and fill out a form, Google Ads will (correctly) ignore it. To test without paying for a click, use the “Troubleshoot” button next to the conversion in Google Ads; it will create a “free” test environment for you.
