Where is the asset group performance report?

The Asset Group Performance Report is the central place to monitor how well the different creative components (headlines, descriptions, images, videos) within your Performance Max (PMax) campaign are performing. This report is essential for optimising your campaign’s creative elements.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Navigate to Your Performance Max Campaign

  1. Sign in to your Google Ads account.

  2. In the left-hand navigation menu, click Campaigns.

  3. Click on the name of the specific Performance Max campaign you want to analyse.

Step 2: Access the Asset Groups

  1. Once you are on the campaign’s page, look for the campaign-specific sub-menu (the menu that appeared under the campaign name).

  2. Click Asset groups. This will show you a list of all asset groups within that campaign.

Step 3: View the Asset Details Report

  1. In the Asset Groups table, find the specific Asset Group you want to check.

  2. In the column next to the asset group name (often called ‘Assets’ or similar), you will see a link. Click View details next to the asset group name.

This will open the Asset Details Report, which contains two main tabs:

  • Table: This shows all the headlines, descriptions, images, and videos you uploaded, along with their individual performance ratings (Poor, Low, Good, Best, Learning).

  • Combinations: This shows you which creative combinations (e.g., Headline 1 + Headline 4 + Description 2) Google is using most frequently and how they rate.

Expert Notes on Using the Report

1. Understand the Performance Rating

The primary metric here is the Performance Rating for each individual asset:

Rating

What it Means

Action to Take

Best

The asset is driving strong performance relative to others.

Keep it! Try to create similar new assets to test against it.

Good

The asset is performing well, but not top-tier.

Keep it! Test a few alternatives with slightly varied messaging.

Low

The asset is underperforming significantly compared to others.

Replace it! Remove this asset and replace it with a new one that mirrors your ‘Best’ performing assets.

Pending / Learning

The asset is new and hasn’t gathered enough data yet.

Wait! Give it at least 2-4 weeks to gather impressions and clicks before judging.

2. Focus on Replacing ‘Low’ Performers

  • Advise: The best way to optimise PMax is through constant asset rotation. Do not rely on “Best” performers forever. Instead, use the ratings to identify and swiftly replace all assets rated as “Low” with fresh ideas. This ensures you are constantly feeding the AI new, high-quality options to test.

3. Review the Combinations Report

  • Advise: Check the Combinations tab to ensure the headlines and descriptions are being paired in a logical and grammatically correct way. If you notice strange or nonsensical combinations, you may need to pin one or two mandatory headlines (as previously discussed with RSAs) to provide more structure to the ad copy.

This report is your most powerful tool for ensuring your PMax campaigns deliver effective messaging across all of Google’s networks.
